Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) introduced legislation on the Senate floor that would mandate plain labelling on products containing cameras and listening devices, but it was defeated by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY).

On Thursday, Ted Cruz chastised his fellow Republican senator and future presidential challenger Rand Paul for refusing to vote on the National Security Agency reform measure, saying he was “dismayed” that it did not move last year.

A voter asked the presidential candidate why he voted in favour of extending the Patriot Act during an event in Cedar Falls, Iowa, on Thursday. The voter was alluding to laws aimed at limiting the government’s meta data phone collection programme.

Despite being a vocal opponent of the NSA, Paul voted against the bill, claiming it did not go far enough. According to Paul’s chief aide, the law “did not fix the problem” and reauthorized expiring provisions of the Patriot Act.
