Introduction of Google Calendar

Google Calendar is a calendar service for time management and scheduling that was created by Google. It was released as a beta on April 13, 2006, and as a public release in July 2009, both on the web and as mobile apps for the Android and iOS platforms.

Users can create and edit events in Google Calendar. Reminders for events can be activated, with settings for kind and time. Other users can be invited to events and event venues can also be added. Users can toggle the visibility of special calendars such as Birthdays, which pulls dates of birth from Google contacts and shows birthday cards on an annual basis, and Holidays, a country-specific calendar that displays dates of notable occasions.

Progressively, Google has added machine learning functionality, such as “Events from Gmail,” which automatically adds event information from a user’s Gmail messages to Google Calendar; “Reminders,” which allows users to add to-do activities that can be automatically updated with new information; “Smart Suggestions,” which recommends titles, contacts, and locations when creating events; and “Goals,” which allows users to enter information on a specified personal goal.

The mobile apps for Google Calendar have gotten mixed reviews. The design was both lauded and criticised in 2015 reviews of the Android and iOS apps. While some reviews commended the design for being “cleaner,” “bolder,” and employing “colourful graphics,” others complained that the images took up too much room. The Smart Suggestions function was similarly appreciated and hated, with variable degrees of success in terms of the app actually suggesting relevant content upon event creation. However, commentators welcomed the integration of Google Calendar and Gmail, stating that “all of the relevant details are there.”

Kevin Fox created the initial Google Calendar user interface. Google Calendar allows users to import events from other calendar applications, including Microsoft Outlook and Apple iCloud calendars.

Google Updates

Google added the ability for users to specify a time zone for an event in December 2010, a noteworthy feature that had previously been lacking; the function’s absence was criticised in the media.

Google implemented a “Events from Gmail” function in August 2015, which automatically adds event information from a user’s Gmail conversations to Google Calendar. The feature, which is enabled by default, will also update events with new information depending on newly received email messages, such as flight delays.

Google implemented a “Reminders” feature in December 2015, allowing users to add to-do activities as Reminders, with those activities appearing in the calendar alongside ordinary events. Google also claims that Reminders can automatically add additional, useful information based on known details like phone numbers or addresses. Reminders is a cross-service feature, which means it appears in the Inbox of Gmail, Google Now, and Google Keep.

Google Calendar’s mobile apps received “Smart Suggestions” in January 2016. Smart suggestions will propose event titles, venues, and contacts. Along with Smart Suggestions, Google launched holiday calendars for 54 new nations, bringing the total to 143 country-specific holiday calendars.

Google introduced the “Goals” function in April 2016. Goals are activities that the user wants to complete. After answering a few questions, such as “How often?” and “Best time?”, Google Calendar will “find the best windows to pencil in time for that goal,” with the calendar adapting to the user’s schedule over time, such as rescheduling a goal activity if an event is added that causes a direct conflict with the time of the goal. The function was expanded in January 2017 to include compatibility for Google Fit and Apple Health, allowing users to track their progress towards fulfilling a goal.

Google stated on September 20, 2022, that reminders from Google Calendar and Google Assistant will integrate with Google Tasks. The migration began in March 2023 with a small number of users before expanding to other users as an optional choice in the second quarter of 2023 and completed on May 22, 2023 in the enterprise sector.
