Operation Vijay’s History
Pakistani troops penetrated Indian territory in the Kargil district, which is located in the former Jammu and Kashmir area (now part of Ladakh UT). In response to the aggression, the Indian Army began ‘Operation Vijay’ with the primary goal of regaining captured Indian land along the Line of Control (LoC). The action was supported by an airstrike by the Indian Air Force on May 26, 1999, as part of “Operation Safed Sagar.”

The major event is held at the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, Ladakh, which serves as the focal point of the commemoration. This year, a special two-day celebration is planned on July 25 and 26, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh as the principal guest. The memorial is a moving tribute to the fallen warriors, prompting strong emotions and respect for their everlasting dedication.
Looking forward to the Silver Jubilee Celebration
Moving ahead, the Central Government has planned a year-long celebration of Kargil Vijay Diwas’ silver jubilee next year. This programme aims to instill patriotism and solidarity among Indian citizens while also preserving the legacy of the Kargil War’s momentous triumph for future generations.
