Because of its early introduction and Microsoft’s enormous data center infrastructure, OpenAI’s huge language models have so far led the AI race. However, ChatGPT’s dominance may not persist indefinitely, as new and sophisticated AI models emerge every month. And one of them stands a much better chance of becoming a true challenger: Google.
According to The Information, Google’s next-generation artificial intelligence models will be available as early as this fall under the new Gemini project. The company plans to use Gemini to power its existing AI chatbot Bard as well as enterprise tools like Google Docs and Slides.
The amount of resources Google has at its disposal, particularly data that can be used to train these AI models, makes Gemini a powerful rival. YouTube videos, Google books, a massive search index, and scientific material from Google Scholar are all available to Google. Much of this data is unique to Google, which could give it an advantage in developing smarter models than competitors. In addition, unlike GPT-4, Gemini is touted to be the first multi-modal model that can handle video, text, and graphics.
Google also has a vast talent pool and years of experience in developing and training large language models. It plans to unveil the updated models next fall, as well as either launch a new Gemini-powered chatbot or upgrade its existing Bard chatbot. This might have a significant influence on Google Cloud, which is likely to be the primary means for business clients to access Gemini.
Gemini was first revealed last month at Google’s developer conference, where the company displayed many AI initiatives. According to a June study, Gemini employs new training techniques from Alphago, an AI system that was the first to defeat a professional human player at the complex board game Go. This may help Gemini plan and solve challenges.
